SUKMA Selangor Eyes Three New Sports For 2026 Games

Kuala lumpur: The Selangor government is proposing to add petanque, muay thai, and silambam as new sports for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, said State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Najwan, who is also the chairman of the 2026 SUKMA Selangor Organising Committee, stated that the proposal will be submitted soon to the SUKMA Supreme Council. A final decision on the inclusion of these sports is expected by August 15. The approval of the proposal hinges on the consensus of all state representatives attending the council meeting, which is chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

Mohd Najwan mentioned that during the Supreme Council meeting on August 5, the state government received requests from national and state sports associations to reconsider additional sports for the Games. Following this, the Selangor State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, decided to propose the inclusion of petanque, muay thai, and silambam to the Supreme Council.

Speaking at a media briefing on SUKMA preparations at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Mohd Najwan reported that overall preparations for the event are over 50 percent complete. This includes facility upgrades, with all work anticipated to be completed by March next year. Addressing the exclusion of pickleball, he noted that while the sport is gaining popularity, it is considered premature to include it in the Games at this time.
