Kuala lumpur: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws upon former Chief Justice of Malaysia, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, at Universiti Malaya's (UM) 65th convocation. This recognition was made in acknowledgment of her service and contributions. Tun Tengku Maimun, a UM alumna, made history as the first woman appointed as the Chief Justice of Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Nazrin presided over the ceremony as Chancellor and also awarded the title of Professor Emeritus to several distinguished academics. In the clinical and scientific fields, the honour was given to Prof Dr Khoo Ee Ming (Family Medicine), Prof Dr Phrabhakaran Nambiar (Forensic Odontology and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology), Prof Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof (Virology), and Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud (Epidemiology and Health Informatics). The title was also conferred upon Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Zambri Zainuddin in Astronomy and Islamic Astronomy, and Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Hidayat Buang in Contemporary Islamic Law.
Earlier in the event, Sultan Nazrin announced the appointment of Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini as the Pro-Chancellor of UM. In his address, he advised graduates to manage their success wisely, remain humble, and uphold moral values to navigate professional challenges. His Royal Highness emphasized the importance of prudence in managing success, particularly when it is sudden. He noted that the ability to leverage achievements for further accomplishment is a blessing, while mismanagement of hard-won success is a tragedy.
Sultan Nazrin encouraged graduates to become individuals who are courteous, trustworthy, honest, sincere, and to act with integrity. He urged them to use knowledge as a guiding light in life and to contribute to a just, peaceful, prosperous, and humane world. He also extended his congratulations and gratitude to the university community for placing UM at the 58th position in the QS World University Rankings.
A Nov 27 UM announcement stated that the convocation, taking place from today to Dec 10, includes 22 sessions to celebrate 11,356 graduates. This cohort, the largest in the university's 120-year history, includes 686 PhD graduates; 5,171 Master's and Postgraduate Education Diploma graduates; 4,127 Bachelor's degree graduates; and 1,372 Advanced Diploma, Executive Diploma, and Diploma graduates.
