Selangor: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed his congratulations and highest praise over the success of the Selangor contingent in emerging as the overall champion of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) yesterday.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, His Royal Highness expressed immense happiness and delight over the extraordinary achievement of the Selangor contingent, who were also the hosts, for successfully securing 101 gold medals, thereby surpassing the initial target of 80 gold medals.
Sultan Sharafuddin said that this success was all the more pride-worthy as this tally represents the highest gold medal collection in the history of SUKMA's organisation since 1986.
The Sultan of Selangor also expressed deep pride and emotion witnessing the dedication, discipline, and high level of fighting spirit displayed by the state's athletes, enabling them to dominate various events and collect a total of 245 medals overall.
"To the Selangor athletes who successfully won gold medals, my congratulations to you. To the silver and bronze medalists, never despair. Continue to strive and improve your performance so you can appear even more stellar in the future, thereby bringing honour to the state of Selangor in the sports arena at both the national and international levels," His Royal Highness stated via a post on the Selangor Royal Office Instagram page today.
The Sultan of Selangor stated that he had also closely followed the development and achievements of Selangor athletes across various events throughout the biennial games. "Some of these events were also attended by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who graciously attended to provide support and boost the morale of the competing athletes," His Royal Highness stated.
His Royal Highness further expressed hope that sporting championships like SUKMA continue to serve as one of the most important platforms in fostering sportsmanship, strengthening brotherhood, and reinforcing unity and harmony among Malaysians of diverse races and religions.
"Indeed, success in sports is not merely measured through medals and championships, but is also reflected through the spirit of togetherness that is capable of uniting the people regardless of background. Sports unite us all!," His Royal Highness said.
Yesterday, Selangor emerged as the overall champion of SUKMA 2026 after collecting 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze medals, outperforming the Federal Territory and Terengganu at the games held from August 15 to 24, 2026. This success marks the 10th time Selangor has emerged as the overall champion, having previously won in the 1988, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2013, and 2016 editions in Sarawak.
