Sultan Sharafuddin Urges Immediate Action on Selangor’s Cleanliness Issues

Selangor: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has voiced deep concern over the worsening cleanliness in Selangor, saying he has received numerous complaints and wants immediate action to restore the state's image.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Sharafuddin shared that people are now providing their personal information and photographic evidence when lodging complaints, indicating the gravity of the situation. He expressed frustration over the state of cleanliness, emphasizing that Selangor, being Malaysia's most developed and populous state with 7.4 million people, should stand as a model of progress and good governance.

The Sultan highlighted the prevalence of overflowing rubbish bins, clogged drains, and litter-strewn roads, which have become common sights. He noted that residents from various towns such as Klang, Petaling Jaya, Ampang, and Subang have voiced their frustrations, reflecting a significant decline in street cleanliness.

Sultan Sharafuddin criticized the respective councils, stating that irregular rubbish collection and lax enforcement against littering are daily irritants pointing to a larger issue. He emphasized the need for clear accountability, measurable cleanliness standards, and urged for waste management contracts to be reviewed and terminated if contractors fail to perform.

The Sultan also linked clogged drains to the state's recurring flood problems, which have led to property destruction and unnecessary burdens on the people. Additionally, he called for more balanced representation in local councils, suggesting the inclusion of professionals and retirees with relevant skills and experience, rather than solely politicians, to improve municipal governance.
