Sibu: A 49-year-old man detained in connection with the death of a five-year-old boy, who was allegedly slashed in Jalan Rantau Panjang Jaya here, has been remanded for another six days to facilitate police investigations. Magistrate Romario Jonoi issued the extended remand order, which runs until Sept 10, at the Magistrate's Court today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the suspect was previously remanded for six days from Aug 29 in connection with the case. In the incident at about 1.45pm on Aug 28, the victim was allegedly slashed on the neck by the suspect, who is also his uncle. Sibu police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad had previously said the victim was rushed to Sibu Hospital for treatment before he was pronounced dead at the hospital's Emergency Department.

He said police arrested the suspect based on information received and seized several items believed to be linked to the case at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years upon conviction. If the death penalty is not imposed, the offender must also be caned at least 12 times.
