Kuala lumpur: The acquisition of two new quay cranes worth RM70 million for Tawau Port is expected to boost port efficiency and strengthen its role as a key maritime gateway on Sabah's east coast. Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor stated that this investment is a strategic step toward enhancing the state's port infrastructure and supporting Sabah's long-term economic growth.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the investment reflects the state government's commitment through Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) to modernize critical infrastructure, thereby enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of Sabah's ports, particularly on the state's east coast. When operational, these cranes are expected to improve productivity, operational reliability, and overall cargo-handling efficiency at Tawau Port. They aim to shorten vessel turnaround times, reduce waiting times, and strengthen the port's capacity to handle larger ships and increasing cargo volumes.

Hajiji emphasized the necessity of an efficient and resilient port system in supporting the growth of key sectors, especially export-oriented industries that contribute significantly to the state's economy. He noted that the Tawau Port upgrade is poised to reinforce its role as a major maritime gateway on Sabah's east coast, while also enhancing connectivity with domestic and regional markets.

The chief minister commended SPSB, Suria Capital Holdings Bhd, and all parties involved for their ongoing commitment to enhancing the state's maritime infrastructure in support of its development agenda. Suria Capital chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan highlighted that the investment represents the group's long-term commitment to developing strategic infrastructure. He noted the vital role of Tawau Port in supporting trade, industry, and regional relations on Sabah's east coast, and emphasized that the RM70 million investment is key to equipping the port with necessary infrastructure and equipment to meet future trade demands, contributing to the economic development of Tawau and its surrounding area.

The launch event was also attended by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III and Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Datuk Ewon Benedick, State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman, and Sabah Ports Authority chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
