Kuala Lumpur: The rapid spread of information today requires parents to play a crucial role in educating their children to think critically and ensure the authenticity of news they receive, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Girl Guides Association Malaysia (PPPM) president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail emphasized the importance of this role, highlighting the challenges posed by technological advancements despite their contributions to global socio-economic growth.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Wan Azizah addressed this concern during the national-level World Thinking Day (WTD) celebration at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA). She stressed the responsibility of parents and guardians to teach children to seek information wisely and verify its accuracy, distinguishing between false and misleading information. The event was attended by nearly 1,500 Girl Guides from 16 contingents across the country, with the presence of PPPM chief commissioner Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
Dr Wan Azizah elaborated on the necessity for society to adapt to technological advancements like AI, deepfake, and the Internet of Things by verifying information rather than accepting it at face value. She also underscored the importance of instilling Eastern values and proper etiquette in both daily life and on social media. Despite being relatively new to the Girl Guides, Dr Wan Azizah recognized the organization's potential and the positive values it promotes, which she believes should be passed on to future leaders.
The WTD celebration's theme, 'Our Story,' highlights the PPPM's achievements in implementing beneficial programs driven by strong cooperation and efforts among its members. Dr Wan Azizah expressed her belief that these programs and activities have contributed to fostering a more harmonious and balanced lifestyle.
