Telcos Must Transform To Face New Technological Challenges – Fahmi

Kuala lumpur: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the necessity for telecommunications companies (telcos) in the nation to transform their structures and business models to tackle emerging challenges fueled by rapid global technological advancements.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi highlighted that beyond the current challenges presented by social media, new technologies like quantum communications, quantum encryption, and satellite communications are set to revolutionize the industry's landscape over the next five to ten years. This evolution demands immediate adaptation from the telcos.

He noted that these new communication modes will introduce challenges not only related to security but also in economic terms. Fahmi stressed the importance for telcos to find ways to transform, as he conveyed during his speech at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) 2025 Scholarship Awards ceremony.

Fahmi remarked on the need for telcos to transition from traditional models to technology-based ones, aligning with the global evolution in the sector. He cited Telekom Malaysia as a prime example of this shift, as it transitions from conventional telephone services to becoming a technology company, illustrating the trend for telecommunications companies to evolve into tech-focused entities.

He advised young professionals aiming to enter the communications industry to master new technologies, especially in emerging fields like quantum communications and satellite technology, to maintain competitiveness in the future.

Earlier, Fahmi presented the MCMC Scholarship Awards, where five outstanding students received the MCMC LEGASI scholarships, and 20 distinguished students were awarded the MCMC CARE scholarships. He stated that these scholarships reflect MCMC's commitment to fostering highly skilled talent to bolster Malaysia's competitive edge in the communications and multimedia sector.

Fahmi also mentioned MCMC's plan to grant scholarships to five outstanding students from Palestine, collaborating with the Palestinian Embassy to identify suitable candidates for Multimedia University. This initiative, announced by the government through the Ministry of Communications in October, will provide five Palestinians with opportunities to study network or radio engineering in Malaysia, prioritizing eligible young individuals from regions such as Gaza, Ramallah, the West Bank, and Nablus.
