Tenaga Nasional Reinforces Commitment to Energy Sovereignty at Asia ESG Summit

Kuala lumpur: Tenaga Nasional Bhd is deeply committed to energy sovereignty by strengthening resilience, safeguarding energy security, and accelerating sustainable growth. TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) Managing Director Datuk Shahrir Abdul Latif emphasized that energy sovereignty is no longer defined by self-sufficiency but by the ability to build resilient, adaptable, and future-ready energy systems.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, energy sovereignty, which means having direct control over a country's energy resources, is shaping the next chapter of the energy transition. Shahrir highlighted this during a presentation at the recent Asia ESG Summit 2026. He stated that the energy trilemma of security, affordability, and sustainability should guide every investment, policy, and technology decision to ensure a resilient and reliable energy future.

Shahrir noted that TNB, which is driving Malaysia's sustainable energy journey, continues to support a responsible transition towards a lower-carbon future through clear strategic priorities. These priorities include progressing towards Net Zero 2050, ending investments in new greenfield coal-fired power plants, and transforming brown assets into cleaner energy solutions. TNB is also advancing low-carbon technologies such as biomass, ammonia, hydrogen co-firing, and carbon capture.

Furthermore, Shahrir reaffirmed that the energy transition will ultimately be powered by strong operations, good governance, disciplined investment, and capable people. He stated, "Reliable electricity depends not only on infrastructure, but also on the expertise and dedication of the people who design, operate, and maintain the nation's energy system every day."

Recognizing that energy sovereignty is strengthened through collaboration, Shahrir mentioned that TNB continues to support the ASEAN Power Grid as a strategic pathway towards greater regional interconnectivity, enhanced energy security, and accelerated clean energy integration across ASEAN. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, TNB remains committed to advancing an energy transition that is practical, responsible, and resilient.

Through trusted partnerships, responsible investment, and stronger regional collaboration, TNB aims to help build a more secure, interconnected, and sustainable energy future.
