Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Ceasefire Amid Border Tensions

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire and the withdrawal of their troops from the border region.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stated that both nations had consented to the ceasefire but requested additional time to execute the withdrawal since their forces were already positioned at the border. The Prime Minister mentioned his recent conversations with the acting Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, emphasizing Malaysia's role due to its peaceful and stable reputation.

Anwar expressed gratitude for the respectful responses from both countries' leaders, attributing it to Malaysia's standing as a peaceful nation. He shared these remarks during the 2025 Anti-Drug Day Celebration, highlighting Malaysia's diplomatic involvement in fostering regional stability.

Earlier reports indicated that Anwar had engaged in discussions with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, stressing Malaysia's apprehension over the escalating border tensions. The conversation aimed to prevent further conflict by advocating for a ceasefire.

The recent skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian troops occurred in a disputed border area, with both parties accusing each other of initiating the conflict. Tensions have been rising since an incident on May 28 in the Preah Vihear area, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. This longstanding border dispute, encompassing an 817-kilometre stretch, continues to challenge diplomatic relations between the two Southeast Asian nations.
