Kuala lumpur: Thorough physical and mental preparation, coupled with the right equipment, is essential for a safe hiking experience, according to outdoor activities trainer Mohd Hafiz Nordin. He stressed the importance of assessing one's fitness level before embarking on either a hill or mountain trek, as each requires different levels of endurance, preparation, and gear.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Hafiz appeared on Bernama TV's Darah Muda programme, where he highlighted the significance of adhering to the internationally recognised Leave No Trace principles. He advised hikers to meticulously plan their trips by checking weather conditions, setting hiking schedules, and determining target times for reaching the summit and descending.
Mohd Hafiz, the founder of D'republic Global, emphasized the necessity of carrying essential items such as a first aid kit, whistle, emergency blanket, fire-starting tools, and a knife or machete, which could prove invaluable in an emergency. He also addressed the use of technology, advising that while devices like GPS and smartwatches are helpful, hikers should not rely solely on them. Instead, he urged enthusiasts to acquire basic navigation and survival skills to manage situations like battery failure or equipment malfunction.
He further noted that hikers frequently trekking at elevations above 2,000 metres should have at least basic navigation and survival skills, as these can be crucial in unexpected circumstances. He mentioned that non-governmental organisations and outdoor activity groups offer training in these areas.
Regarding group dynamics, Mohd Hafiz advocated for the buddy system, recommending that hikers avoid venturing alone, adhere to instructions from group leaders and sweepers, and maintain regular communication with fellow participants. He pointed out that effective communication within the group naturally supports the buddy system, as hikers become more attuned to the condition and location of their peers.
Mohd Hafiz concluded by advising that hikers who feel exhausted should rest and seek assistance instead of pushing themselves beyond their limits. He underscored that adequate knowledge, proper equipment, and careful planning are key to ensuring hiking remains both safe and enjoyable.
