Kuala lumpur: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) have entered into an Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA) and a Cooling Energy Supply Agreement (CESA) to enhance the reliability and sustainability of Malaysia's energy and water infrastructure.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the collaboration represents a significant step towards improving the efficiency of critical public infrastructure, aligning with national goals for sustainability, energy transition, and water security. Under the ESA, TNB will deliver high-voltage electricity to the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant in Kuala Langat, Selangor, which is the largest of its kind in South-East Asia with a capacity of 1,400 million litres per day.

In a joint statement, TNB and Air Selangor announced that upon the plant's full completion in 2031, it is projected to supply clean and safe treated water to 9.62 million consumers across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya. The agreement sets a precedent by making the plant the first in Malaysia to receive a direct 132 kV high-voltage electricity supply, thereby enhancing its operational reliability and efficiency.

The CESA involves TNB, through its subsidiary TNB Engineering Corporation Sdn Bhd (TNEC), providing Gas District Cooling services to Air Selangor's Kuala Lumpur facility under a 20-year concession. This initiative positions Air Selangor as the first water utility company in Malaysia to implement district cooling services, promising improved system reliability and energy performance.

The agreements were formalized by TNB president and CEO Datuk Shamsul Ahmad and Air Selangor CEO Adam Saffian Ghazali. The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Shamsul stated that the collaboration underscores the importance of integrating the energy and water sectors to bolster the resilience of national infrastructure while supporting Malaysia's development goals. He emphasized TNB's commitment to sustainable energy solutions which benefit consumers and strengthen utility services.

Adam Saffian highlighted the partnership as a crucial step in ensuring a consistent supply of clean water for millions of consumers. He noted Air Selangor's role in supporting economic growth, aligning with its status as a leading utility provider globally.
