MANILA: The country’s top junior tennis players continue their quest for ranking points at the Mayor Doc Totep Calderon Cup, which starts in Roxas, Isabela on Friday.
The tournament features boys and girls 12-under, 14-under, 16-under, 18-under, and 10-under unisex categories.
Jan Cadee Dagoon of Olongapo City is among the title contenders in the competition sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta). She has won the 14-under crown in Cainta, Olongapo, and Parañaque.
Top seeds Ivan Charles Manila and Yeoji Zech Gonzales are also favored to rule the boys and girls 18-under categories, respectively, in the event supported by the Cagayan Valley Tennis Federation headed by Rolly Guañez.
According to Mayor Calderon, the tournament has great potential to elevate tennis in Roxas, Isabela, and provide a platform to discover potential talents.
After the juniors, there will also be an Open tournament from May 28 to June 2 in the Legends division, including the men’s doubles for various age groups, wo
men’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Meanwhile, Tuguegarao Tennis Club and the municipalities of Aparri and Ballesteros will host tournaments as part of the Palawan Pawnshop National Tennis Championships, a nationwide initiative spearheaded by Palawan Pawnshop president and CEO Bobby Castro.
