Toto Wolff Expresses Confidence in Kimi Antonelli’s F1 Title Pursuit

Rabat:Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team principal Toto Wolff has expressed his confidence in driver Kimi Antonelli, as the young Italian emerges as a leading contender for the 2026 drivers' title. Antonelli, aged 20, has impressed by winning eight of the 16 races this season, establishing an 84-point lead over his teammate George Russell ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wolff affirmed that Mercedes anticipated Antonelli's moments of brilliance and setbacks, emphasizing the team's commitment to his long-term development. Mercedes identified Antonelli's potential when he was just 11 years old, nurturing both his driving skills and personality despite challenges.

Wolff recounted that Antonelli experienced a challenging period last year, going nine races without scoring points. He noted that in another team, this might have led to Antonelli's departure, but Mercedes had anticipated such fluctuations in performance, viewing them as a necessary part of growth.

Wolff highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent by providing opportunities and guidance from experienced personnel. Drawing from his own experience, he mentioned being denied greater responsibility at a steel company, which led him to leave due to a lack of trust and opportunity.

Regarding Antonelli's motivation, Wolff stated that the driver remains determined to achieve the ultimate F1 prize. Despite his multiple Grand Prix wins, Antonelli is driven by the goal of winning a championship and repeating that success.

Wolff also discussed the dynamic between Antonelli and Russell, noting that both drivers are highly motivated to win championships. Russell, however, has faced car issues and mechanical reliability problems this season, impacting his performance.

Russell is set to start the Singapore Grand Prix from the back of the grid due to a power-unit failure at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, resulting in a grid penalty. Wolff acknowledged the risks associated with pushing technological boundaries but believed overcoming these challenges would ultimately strengthen Russell.
