Kuala Lumpur: Tourists from six ASEAN countries, along with Timor Leste, are being encouraged to utilize the autogate facilities at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 to streamline their departure process from Malaysia. This initiative includes travelers from Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Home Ministry (KDN) announced that this facility was implemented on February 15. It serves as a preparatory measure to accommodate an expected rise in international tourists, aligning with Malaysia's upcoming responsibilities as ASEAN Chair in 2025 and the Visit Malaysia Year in 2026.
The KDN stated that this development reflects the aspirations of the MADANI government to enhance the public service delivery system, ensuring it is efficient and courteous for both citizens and foreign visitors.
"This expansion also supports the spirit of inclusivity and regional cooperation, particularly in bolstering diplomatic and tourism relations between Malaysia, ASEAN countries, and Timor Leste," noted the statement from KDN.
Previously, the autogate facility was available to travelers from 63 countries, including two ASEAN nations, Singapore and Brunei. However, exceptions apply to passport holders from countries without chip-equipped passports, adhering to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for security and technical compliance. This ensures the autogate system can accurately and securely verify identities.
