Trump Raises Global Tariff To 15 Pct After US Supreme Court Ruling

Kuala lumpur: President Donald Trump said he would raise the global tariff to 15 per cent from 10 per cent, following a US Supreme Court ruling that struck down most of his earlier trade measures. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Trump announced that the increase, to be imposed under Section 122, would take effect immediately and would be over and above existing tariffs. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10 per cent Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been 'ripping' the US off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15 per cent level." He further mentioned that the Trump administration would determine and issue the new legally permissible tariffs. The US Supreme Court, on Friday, declared that the president's utilization of emergency powers to impose tariffs on nearly all of America's trading partners was unconstitutional. The highest c ourt upheld the lower court's findings, asserting that Trump had exceeded his presidential powers by using the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to enforce extensive global tariffs, along with fentanyl-related duties on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico. The court's decision, which struck down most of Trump's tariffs, was detailed in a 170-page ruling. Following this, Trump indicated that he had signed documents to impose a 10 per cent tariff on all imports from every country.
