Kuala lumpur: US President Donald Trump is set to announce the new tariff rate on Malaysian goods by tomorrow, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed. Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia's Finance Minister, shared that the decision came after a phone conversation with Trump held at 6:50 am.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stated that discussions with Trump focused on the principles of free trade. The discussions extend to ongoing negotiations involving Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) with the US Trade Representative and Secretary of Commerce. Anwar expressed hope that the impending tariff decision would not negatively impact Malaysia's economy, as he addressed Parliament during his 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) speech.
The US plans to implement a 25 percent import tariff on all Malaysian goods starting August 1, 2025. Anwar also mentioned Trump's appreciation for Malaysia's efforts in resolving the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. Anwar attributed the successful mediation to ASEAN consensus and cooperation from both countries, aided by the support of the US and China.
Trump confirmed his participation in the 47th ASEAN Summit scheduled in Kuala Lumpur in October. Meanwhile, MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated that Malaysia awaits Trump's official response tomorrow. Following this, a joint statement from the Office of the USTR and MITI will outline the agreed matters. Tengku Zafrul shared this update on the social media platform X, after a call from US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who had just briefed Trump on the issue.
