Sepang: The Tunggul Melati Trail (TMT) returns this year, drawing more than 1,500 local and international runners to experience its hidden gems, scenic landscapes and challenging routes across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the second edition of TMT, taking place from Sept 4 to 6, has seen participation more than double from 700 runners last year to 1,525, while the number of participating countries has risen from 13 to 25. Despite being relatively new to Malaysia's trail-running scene, TMT is strengthening its international profile, with growing overseas participation and a nomination for the Asia Trail Master 2026.
Pasak Adventure director Mohammad Fazreen Idham Mohd Jais said the event's distinctive two-state route takes runners through the districts of Sepang in Selangor and Nilai in Negeri Sembilan. TMT features six race categories - 85 km, 65 km, 40 km, 15 km, a 10.5 km segment challenge and 5 km - catering to different levels of runners while testing their endurance, stamina and mental strength.
With participation more than doubling this year, Mohammad Fazreen said organisers have also strengthened logistics and safety measures, with about 60 to 70 per cent of the route changed from last year. 'We have improved route markings and deployed both static and mobile marshals along the course to ensure runners' safety. This year, we introduced pacers to help runners gauge whether they are on track to meet the cut-off times (COT) while also ensuring their safety throughout the course,' he told a press conference on Saturday.
Beyond the technical and safety aspects of the race, Mohammad Fazreen said TMT offers runners the opportunity to experience nature while putting their endurance to the test. 'The trail takes participants through forested and hilly terrain, including challenging sandy and rocky sections. The exposed sections will further test participants' endurance, particularly in unpredictable weather conditions,' he said.
The route also showcases some of Sepang's lesser-known natural attractions, including Bukit Tunggul, Bukit Melati and Tasik Idaman, adding a sports tourism dimension to the event. 'Participants will also encounter sections offering spectacular panoramas reminiscent of the 'Grand Canyon' and safari landscapes,' Mohammad Fazreen said.
Beyond the trails, the growing turnout is expected to provide a bigger boost to the local economy, with organisers estimating an economic impact of between RM900,000 and RM1.1 million this year, compared with about RM560,000 in 2025. Mohammad Fazreen said the impact would be driven by spending by participants and visitors on accommodation, food and beverage, retail, transportation, logistics and other local services. 'Given the increase in the number of visitors and participants this year, we estimate that the event will generate between RM900,000 and RM1.1 million in economic impact for the local community,' he said.
TMT is also offering prizes worth up to RM25,000, including RM10,000 in cash, across the various race categories.
