Melaka: Two food and beverage companies in Melaka were found to have breached Malaysia Halal Certification (SPHM) requirements, not business licensing conditions, and are therefore still allowed to operate. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin clarified that SPHM is not a requirement for business licence applications, which fall under the jurisdiction of local authorities (PBT).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the companies' SPHM certification had been revoked, a matter overseen by the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). Rais emphasized the need for clarification due to confusion circulating on social media regarding the differing jurisdictions.
'We do not want the public to misunderstand and assume that the state government is disregarding issues affecting the Muslim community, particularly those related to halal matters,' Rais told reporters. He further asserted that the state government would not compromise with any party that violates business licensing conditions and action would be taken accordingly.
