Gerik: Two Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students critically injured in the tragic bus crash near Tasik Banding, Gerik, have regained consciousness and are now in stable condition. Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) director Dr Saiful Azlan Sharif, said both students - Lili Suzana Mat Yaakob, 23, and Nor Erika Elysha Mohd Zaidi, 21 - are currently being treated in regular wards following their transfer from the red zone.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Saiful shared that both students suffered head injuries, but examinations and diagnostic tests revealed that the injuries were not as severe as initially feared. He mentioned that Lili Suzana sustained more serious head trauma but is now conscious and stable. Dr Saiful relayed these updates to reporters during a visit by Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad to the hospital.
Dr Saiful added that Nor Erika sustained a broken arm and is receiving treatment in stages, with recovery progress being closely monitored. Regarding the possibility of transferring either patient to a hospital in Terengganu, Dr Saiful stated that any decision would be based on medical considerations and family discussions.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Noraini revealed that the ministry had contacted the Social Welfare Department (JKM) in Terengganu to offer counselling support to the families of all victims. She also provided aid from JKM and the National Welfare Foundation to the two students.
Noraini explained that Lili Suzana was still traumatised by the incident and recounted how the bus was speeding prior to the crash. Lili Suzana reportedly told her that she was asleep when a friend woke her up, expressing concern about the driver's speed. Despite warnings, the driver allegedly ignored the calls to slow down. Noraini assured Lili Suzana that she is not alone and has the support of UPSI, the hospital, and JKM.
The accident occurred early yesterday morning when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway. The bus had departed from Jertih, Terengganu at 9pm on Sunday and was headed to the university's Tanjung Malim campus.
