KUALA LUMPUR, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) proudly ascends to the 138th position from 159 in the QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2025, as announced today.
This achievement positions UKM as the second-best university among both public and private institutions in Malaysia.
UKM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Toriman said this success reflects the university’s strong commitment to enhancing research quality, teaching, sustainability, internationalisation and graduate employability.
‘This success is attributed to increased acquisition of international and industry grants, our focus on sustainable development goals (SDGs) and contributions from our alumni, all of which have propelled UKM’s standing on the international stage.
‘This accomplishment is a testament to UKM’s persistent efforts in strengthening its reputation and excellence within the global higher education landscape,” he said.
Mohd Ekhwan emphasised that the advancement marks a proud achievement, inspiring the local univ
ersity to pursue greater excellence in fortifying the research and innovation ecosystem, as well as advancing the internationalisation of higher education.
He said this remarkable feat underscores UKM’s meticulous planning in realising its long-term vision, positioning the university as a more prominent, globally recognised institution that readily welcomes international students.
“The accomplishment also fosters deeper collaboration with industry partners, driving forward research and innovation initiatives,” he said.
He pointed out that through concerted efforts in internationalisation and global initiatives, UKM has made significant progress in broadening international perspectives, exemplified by the establishment of offshore campuses in Qatar and Indonesia.
‘This success is also part of UKM’s journey of excellence towards internationalisation, focusing on building partnerships with institutions worldwide.
“While our commitment to enhancing international recognition remains steadfast, UKM continues t
o prioritise translational research, fostering social transformation and enhancing societal quality,” he said.
He added that while rankings are not the primary focus, the attained position presents broader opportunities for UKM to advance its exploration and revitalisation efforts across all aspects of research, internationalisation and sustainability.
