UKM Launches Master’s Programme in ESG to Boost Sustainability Education

Kuala lumpur: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is set to launch a Master's programme focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) under the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI). The initiative aims to enhance ESG talent and assist organisations in navigating the sustainability landscape.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, UKM's vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Sufian Jusoh, highlighted that the programme would allow ESG practitioners and professionals both in Malaysia and internationally to pursue further education without leaving their jobs. He shared that the programme builds on initiatives such as the Professional ESG Certificate, developed in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), equipping professionals with globally recognised ESG skills.

Earlier this week, UKM co-hosted the MAPAN ESG Summit 2026, a national event that gathered government agencies, industry leaders, and academics to drive Malaysia's ESG agenda forward. At the summit, UKM unveiled its AI-powered ESG Advisory platform, designed to aid organisations in enhancing their sustainability strategies through comprehensive ESG assessments.

Prof Sufian stated that the platform incorporates international ESG standards, enabling organisations to conduct thorough assessments and improve their sustainability practices. This launch underscores UKM's ongoing dedication to developing ESG expertise, advancing research, and delivering practical solutions for organisations dealing with sustainability challenges.

He further emphasized the importance of authentic leadership in ensuring ESG initiatives go beyond mere compliance. Organisations need leaders who make decisions considering both business performance and the long-term welfare of society and the environment, upholding good governance practices. Sufian noted that this broader approach aligns with the OECD's concept of Inclusive and Responsible Business and Investment (IRBI), which advocates for good governance, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity while enhancing existing ESG and corporate frameworks.
