Kota kinabalu: A proposal to nominate the Kota Belud Tamu (traditional market) as a UNESCO World Heritage Site requires extensive research, documentation and preparation before it can be considered, the Sabah State Legislative Assembly was told today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Dr Andi Md. Shamsureezal said the nomination process involves rigorous assessments and could take a considerable amount of time to complete. He emphasized that the key requirements include comprehensive studies on both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage associated with the 'Tamu', as well as detailed documentation of heritage assets, including any historical structures or archaeological remains linked to the site.

"In addition, the nomination must be supported by strong historical and scientific evidence, as well as proof of the site's 'Outstanding Universal Value' (OUV) in accordance with UNESCO's criteria," he said. Dr Andi was responding to an oral question from Datuk Mohd Arsad Bistari (GRS-Tempasuk) on the state's efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site and Geopark recognition for the Kota Belud Tamu during the State Assembly sitting today.

Dr Andi also noted that Kota Belud has already gained international recognition as part of the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark (KUGGp), which was designated in May 2023. He added that Sabah Parks, as the lead agency for the geopark, has introduced various initiatives to strengthen the conservation and promotion of the district's cultural heritage through the organisation of the 'Tamu Geopark' programme.

According to him, the initiative has elevated the Kota Belud Tamu as a platform to showcase local gastronomy, traditional attire, handicrafts, arts and culture, local products and community-based geoproducts, while enhancing the area's tourism appeal and creating economic opportunities for the local community.
