Segamat:Peninsular Malaysia: Unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings have been observed in 38 areas across Peninsular Malaysia as a result of ongoing dry weather in the ASEAN southern region and the spread of cross-border haze.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Department of Environment (DOE) reported that the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre detected 210 hotspots in Sumatera and 94 in Kalimantan, Indonesia, along with one in Pahang. Medium to thick cross-border haze has been identified in south and central Sumatera, Singapore, and the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as several areas in Kalimantan.
The highest API reading recorded was 190 in Segamat, Johor. Following closely were readings of 186 in Seremban, 185 in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, 181 in Kluang, Johor, 178 in Rompin, Pahang, and Johan Setia, Selangor. Additionally, 30 areas reported moderate API readings, with no areas achieving good air quality status.
The DOE addressed confusion over differences in official API readings on international platforms or third-party providers, attributing it to variations in scale, calculation methods, threshold values, and data sources. Some independent platforms rely on satellite data or inexpensive sensors that may inaccurately measure atmospheric particle density and misinterpret water vapor or clouds as smoke.
The public is advised to use the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) on the MyJAS EQMS app for official daily API status and health advisory updates. The DOE also highlighted that the National Haze Action Plan includes measures such as suspending outdoor activities at schools if API readings exceed 100. Should readings exceed 150 for more than 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will activate disaster management committees and initiate cloud seeding operations.
The DOE reminded the public to refrain from open burning during the current hot and dry weather, warning that violations could result in fines ranging from RM25,000 to RM1 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
