Sarawak: The Sarawak Premier's Department's Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) continues to play an important role in strengthening the state's commitment to unity and inclusiveness, reaffirming the state's long-standing belief that diversity is a key asset in social and economic development. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized that UNIFOR is more than just an administrative agency, as it embodies the state government's inclusivity policy, which is a pillar of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UNIFOR supports and coordinates matters related to non-Islamic religious groups, fostering an environment where interfaith harmony is actively nurtured. Sarawak has been recognized as a model of peaceful coexistence, attracting interest from regional leaders wishing to learn from its approach. Abang Johari highlighted this in his speech at the UNIFOR Appreciation Dinner, noting the state's role as a beacon of unity and harmony.
UNIFOR, established in 2017 under the Sarawak Premier's Department, has a mission to ensure that all non-Islamic faith communities, including Christians, Buddhists, Taoists, Hindus, Sikhs, and Baha'is, receive necessary assistance for maintaining decent places of worship. Every year since its inception, funds have been allocated through UNIFOR as grants to support the construction and renovation of religious sites across Sarawak.
Further strengthening its commitment, Abang Johari announced an additional RM10 million allocation for 2026, bringing the total funding to RM120 million since UNIFOR's formation. This increased funding underlines Sarawak's dedication to fostering inclusivity and religious harmony in the region.
