The raja muda of perlis:he Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, said Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has over 40 doctoral researchers in microelectronics who serve as key assets in strengthening Malaysia's semiconductor sector. He added that this expertise is brought together under the Centre of Excellence for Micro System Technology (MiCTEC).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MiCTEC is a centre of excellence focused on research and development of small-scale technology for electronic applications in the semiconductor industry. He made these remarks while leading the UniMAP International Leadership Mobility (ILM) delegation on a visit to FPT Software here. The delegation was received by the company's chairman, Nguyen Tuan Phuong.
Also present were the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, who is UniMAP's 1st Pro-Chancellor; their daughters, Hajah Sharifah Khatreena Nuraniah Jamalullail, UniMAP's 2nd Pro-Chancellor; and Hajah Sharifah Farah Adriana Jamalullail. They were accompanied by UniMAP deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof Ir Ts Dr Shahriman Abu Bakar.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra, in his capacity as UniMAP Chancellor, said MiCTEC comprises eight research groups covering Analog and RF IC Design, Digital Circuit Design, System Design, Materials and Devices, Micro-electromechanical Systems, Fabrication and Characterisation, Optoelectronics, as well as Packaging and Test. He explained that these fields collectively cover most of the critical components within the microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem.
"This positions MiCTEC as one of UniMAP's key assets in the development of these technologies. The presence of over 40 researchers demonstrates that UniMAP's strength in semiconductors is not limited to teaching and learning, but is backed by deep research expertise," he said. He added that the researchers' multidisciplinary expertise allows the university to expand its capabilities in applied research, prototype development and technology problem-solving required by the industry.
According to him, MiCTEC's research ecosystem also opens avenues for technology transfer and the development of highly skilled talent, particularly in microelectronics, a field increasingly vital to the nation's industrial competitiveness. "This strength is further reinforced through collaborations with industry players, enabling academic and research expertise to be translated into solutions with real value and practical application. This aligns with Malaysia's need to strengthen its local semiconductor ecosystem through research, innovation, and talent development, ensuring that higher education institutions continue to play a crucial role in supporting the nation's high-tech industrial growth," he said.
