Unusual Zikir Ritual in Setapak Prompts Investigation by Religious Authorities

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) has commenced an investigation into an unusual zikir ritual performed at a cemetery in Setapak. Statements have been recorded from those involved, as confirmed by Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Religious Affairs.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the statements collected from the individuals involved have been forwarded to the Federal Territory Mufti Department for further review. If the ritual is deemed contrary to Islamic teachings, JAWI plans to escalate the matter to the Syariah Prosecution Department for potential legal action.

The investigation follows a 23-second video that surfaced online on December 26, showing a group engaging in the zikir ritual loudly at a cemetery in Danau Kota, Setapak. The video sparked public concern, especially within the Muslim community. On the same day, ACP Mohamad Lazim Ismail, the Wangsa Maju District Police Chief, confirmed that a report regarding the incident was received, citing the event's occurrence at approximately 10:05 a.m. on December 27.

In a related event, Mohd Na'im attended the Gema Syukur 2025 programme, which is part of the 'Gagasan Kalimah Tayyibah' initiative launched on August 29 of the previous year. The programme aims to foster a society that embraces positive dialogue, discourages slander, and promotes compassion and care among individuals.
