Tanjong malim: The Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) has received recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the implementation of the First Mobile Mental Health Counselling Programme, through the 'Counsellor on Wheels' (COW) initiative, thus becoming the first mobile mental health counselling programme in the country. Its deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin, said that the initiative is a proactive step by the university to engage with the community by bringing mental health intervention services directly to the public.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 'Counsellor on Wheels' programme transforms the Bas Pendidikan UPSI into a mobile counselling service platform that focuses on prevention, psychoeducation, intervention, and referrals to specialists. Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin stated that the programme demonstrates the university's commitment to addressing societal issues, particularly in mental well-being.
MBOR representative Siti Hajar Johor presented the recognition during the launching ceremony of the First Mobile Mental Health Counselling and the Autism Awareness Month Celebration held at the Main Auditorium, Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus, UPSI in Tanjong Malim.
In addition, Norkhalid reported that the implementation team, consisting of psychology officers and student facilitators trained in Psychological First Aid (PFA), successfully assisted 7,648 participants across 38 locations in Peninsular Malaysia. The initiative is further enhanced by the use of virtual reality (VR) technology, which provides a more effective intervention experience and helps reduce societal stigma towards mental health treatment.
Meanwhile, the ceremony also celebrated Autism Awareness Month, observed throughout April, with a focus on enhancing understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism within the community. Norkhalid emphasized that autism should be seen as a uniqueness requiring support and understanding, rather than judgement.
"As an educational institution, UPSI is committed to building an inclusive ecosystem that not only raises awareness but also strengthens acceptance of diversity in society," he added.
