Penang: The Penang Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) is currently reviewing the investigation paper concerning the incident involving a hardware shop owner in Jalan Bertam Perdana, who was detained in connection with the display of the Jalur Gemilang upside down in front of his premises.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman confirmed that the investigation paper had been submitted to the DPP's office at 2:30 pm today, following the police's completion of their investigation. The DPP has been informed that the investigation paper will be forwarded to Putrajaya for additional instructions.
The media reported today that the 59-year-old hardware shop owner has been released on police bail following the recording of his statement by the police. The case has prompted an investigation under several legal provisions, including Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The incident gained attention after a 21-second video went viral on social media, showing two individuals at the hardware store seemingly installing and flying the Malaysian flag upside down, which led to widespread criticism from the public. In response, several non-governmental organizations and Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican filed a police report.
