Kuala Lumpur: Veteran journalists should regard their younger peers as successors rather than rivals, says former journalist and television personality Charles Mohan. He emphasized the potential for collaboration between different generations of journalists to enrich the industry.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Charles highlighted the strengths that younger journalists bring to the table, particularly their proficiency in digital technology and social media. He acknowledged that while veteran journalists may lack digital savvy, younger journalists excel in this area, providing fresh approaches that could benefit the industry. Charles shared these insights during his appearance on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme.

Charles advocated for a shift in newsroom culture, urging experienced journalists and editors to adopt a more open and respectful attitude towards younger journalists. He emphasized the importance of viewing young journalists as the next generation poised to carry forward the legacy of journalism in the country, rather than dismissing them due to their age or limited experience.

He called for a symbiotic relationship where veteran journalists could impart their experience while learning from the fast-paced and innovative approaches of their younger counterparts. Charles stressed the necessity for collaboration and knowledge exchange between generations to keep the journalism profession relevant, progressive, and adaptable.

Supporting Charles's views, Bernama TV journalist Zanariah Nor Zin noted that young journalists bring numerous creative ideas that make digital content more engaging. She pointed out that Bernama's digital platforms have become more dynamic and appealing due to the contributions of fresh graduates who are well-versed in the digital world. Zanariah expressed confidence that the combination of digital skills and in-depth reporting by young journalists could significantly enhance the quality of journalism.
