Addis ababa: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has characterized his inaugural visit to Ethiopia as both significant and fruitful, emphasizing that the relationship between Malaysia and Ethiopia transcends conventional diplomatic interactions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed his commitment to enhancing the ties between the two countries, which are underpinned by deep friendship, mutual progress, and universal humanitarian values. He articulated these sentiments in a statement following a state banquet hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali at the National Palace.
During their discussions, Anwar and Abiy addressed a range of bilateral issues, including trade, investment, technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and humanitarian concerns such as the situations in Gaza and Sudan. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia-Ethiopia relations have a long-standing history, citing the legacy of King Najashi, who provided refuge to early Muslims, as a testament to the enduring bond between the nations.
Anwar highlighted the importance of unity and compassion, questioning the necessity of fueling division when history teaches valuable lessons on humanity. He also drew parallels between Malaysia's MADANI framework, which stresses core values alongside material progress, and Abiy's Medemer philosophy, which advocates for meaningful reform.
The Malaysian Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Abiy for his visit to Kuala Lumpur last year, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Anwar humorously noted the busy itinerary arranged by his Ethiopian counterpart, which included numerous cultural visits.
Anwar's itinerary in Ethiopia included visits to the Ethiopian Science Museum, showcasing the nation's technological advancements and modern infrastructure, and Friendship Park, a popular spot for both locals and tourists. On the second day of his visit, he explored the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, which commemorates the historic Battle of Adwa, a pivotal event in African history that resulted in a decisive Ethiopian victory over the Kingdom of Italy.
Following his engagements in Addis Ababa, Anwar is set to continue his tour with a working visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit until November 23, and subsequently to Nairobi, Kenya, from November 23 to 24, before returning to Malaysia.
