Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to preside over the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting tomorrow, focusing on strategies to mitigate the impact of the ongoing geopolitical conflict in West Asia on Malaysia's food security.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin expressed hopes that the meeting will offer solutions for agricultural industry players, especially those in the fisheries and crop cultivation sectors. These sectors are currently grappling with significant challenges due to the unfolding crisis.
Chan highlighted that the geopolitical tensions in West Asia have sparked global repercussions, including an energy crisis and rising oil prices, which directly strain Asian economies. "The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz signals that we can no longer take the stability of the world's fuel supply for granted. This instability reverberates through the food supply chain, ultimately impacting the cost of living," Chan stated.
He further emphasized that while Malaysia remains resilient amidst the global crisis, complacency is not an option. The government is dedicated to adopting proactive measures to brace for potential adversities, including the worst-case scenario. Chan shared these insights on his Facebook post following a briefing session on the MTEN paper presented to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. The briefing concentrated on the current state of the nation's food supply and necessary measures to fortify mitigation efforts.
