Woman Loses RM1.39 Million After Clicking Fake Online Cake Advertisement

Miri: A 43-year-old woman in Miri lost RM1.389 million after clicking on a fraudulent online cake advertisement, which is believed to have enabled unauthorised transfers from her company's bank accounts.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah stated that the victim lodged a police report after discovering the significant losses. The incident began when the victim encountered a cake advertisement on social media. Upon clicking the link to browse the menu and place an order, her mobile phone screen abruptly went dark and became unresponsive.

At around 10 am the same day, the victim contacted her bank and was informed that RM1,389,132 had been transferred without her authorisation from two of her company's bank accounts. The fraudulent activity involved a total of 19 transactions to 15 different bank accounts on July 14, as detailed by Mohd Farhan in a recent statement.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997. The Act stipulates a maximum penalty of a RM150,000 fine, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction.
