Workers, Residents Encouraged To Pay Zakat In Selangor

Selangor: Muslim workers and residents in Selangor are encouraged to pay their zakat through the Selangor Zakat Board (Zakat Selangor) to ensure the proceeds are channelled to eligible asnaf (zakat recipients) in the state in accordance with Islamic law and prevailing fatwas.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the chief executive officer of Zakat Selangor, Mohd Khaidzir Shahari, highlighted that there is a common confusion among workers in Selangor who choose to have their zakat deducted in their home states. He noted that zakat should be paid in the state where individuals work or reside, aligning with the objective of redistributing wealth within the local community.

Mohd Khaidzir emphasized that Selangor is a hub where Muslims from across the country earn their livelihood and reside. As a result, zakat beneficiaries in the state also include individuals from various states who have settled in Selangor. He stressed that paying zakat in the state of employment or residence ensures fair distribution to those in need, in adherence to Islamic law and fatwas. These remarks were made during the 2026 Gemerlapan Rakan Strategik Zakat Selangor (GRASIAZ) ceremony.

The GRASIAZ 2026 event was organized to acknowledge the contributions of Zakat Selangor's strategic partners, which include employers, collection agents, higher education institutions, and corporate zakat payers, in fostering a culture of zakat payment in the state. The ceremony recognized 300 employer representatives, 115 collection agents, 15 corporate zakat payers, and other strategic partners who collaborated with Zakat Selangor throughout 2025.

Additionally, Mohd Khaidzir reported that the Salary Deduction Scheme (SPG) performed well last year, with 5,069 employers participating and total collections reaching RM415.17 million. For the current year, Zakat Selangor aims to collect RM760 million through the SPG and collection agents to benefit more asnaf, encourage consistent zakat payment, and strengthen the ummah's economy.

He further noted that zakat collections via agents amounted to RM279.74 million in 2025, involving 132,728 payers. Zakat Selangor currently works with 262 collection agents and over 124 collection partners.
