World’s first stamp on display at PHLPost exhibit

Manila: The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) and the Philippine Stamp Collectors Society on Wednesday launched a three-day exhibit to celebrate World Post Day, featuring the world’s first stamp issued in the 1800s.

PHLPost Postmaster General Luis Carlos said the event showcases the role of the postal sector in communication and business, and its contribution to global, social and economic development.

“The post office has a presence everywhere on our planet reaching out even the most remote places offering a wide range of services to everyone,’ he said in his speech during the opening of the Manna Filatelica 2024 Stamp Exhibition in Manila.

The exhibit at the SM City San Lazaro features the original 1840 Penny Black Postage Stamp, which is the world’s first stamp issued, and the Queen Isabella, the first postage stamp for the Philippine Islands. It is open to the public until Friday.

It also showcases the collection of national and international philatelists who aim to engage the younger generation
to collect stamps.

The World Post Day coincides with the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Berne, Switzerland.

The UPU is the second oldest organization under the United Nations that continues to unite the postal networks of 192 member countries.

As an active member of the UPU, PHLPost is currently working with its local and international partners to support its modernization and digital transformation program.

Carlos said PHLPost is now optimizing its mail and parcel delivery systems through the establishment of Barangay Postal Stations nationwide and the Kartero App, among others.

During the exhibit, PHLPost unveiled the 150th Anniversary of the UPU commemorative stamps featuring the four winners of the UPU 150th Stamp Design Contest.
