Ankara: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the laying of a wreath at the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkiye, is an obligatory official protocol for all heads of state during official visits to the country. This protocol is a diplomatic requirement that has long been established by the Turkish government.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that the ceremony is not a matter of personal choice nor does it reflect the ideological views of any leader. Instead, it is a mandatory part of the official program set by Turkiye. He highlighted that every head of state on an official visit must perform this ceremony, regardless of individual agreement or disagreement.
Speaking at a press conference prior to his departure for home after his three-day official visit to Turkiye, Anwar clarified that the practice is consistent regardless of the political party or leadership in power in Turkiye. This protocol has been observed by all Malaysian prime ministers who have made official visits to the country, including former leaders such as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Anwar elaborated on the historical significance of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's contributions, particularly his role in resisting the Allied powers' attempts to divide the Ottoman Empire post-World War I, which led to the liberation of the country and the establishment of the modern republic. Anwar acknowledged his own differing views on some decisions made by Ataturk, especially concerning Islam, language reform, and script changes, but recognized Ataturk's contributions and the respect he commands among the Turkish people.
In conclusion, Anwar advised against quick judgments or condemnations without understanding the historical context and the established international diplomatic practices that are customary in relations between nations.
