X Implements Stricter Controls on Grok to Prevent Inappropriate Content Generation

Kuala lumpur: Social media platform X has confirmed that its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, is now restricted from generating or editing harmful content, including pornography, sexual material, or incest, due to enhanced regulatory measures on its image editing and video generation capabilities. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil disclosed this update following a meeting with representatives from X for the Asia-Pacific region at Menara Komunikasi.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi shared that during the hour-long meeting, X representatives assured him that users can no longer manipulate images or videos to create obscene or inappropriate content, a misuse that had occurred in the past. The meeting included Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and senior officials from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Fahmi indicated that further details would be discussed in the Minister's Question Time session in Parliament. The government expressed appreciation for X's initiative to address the issue directly in Putrajaya. Fahmi also highlighted the platform's commitment to collaborating with the Communications Ministry and MCMC under the Safe Internet Campaign to enhance safety for all users.

He noted a strong commitment from X's management to ensure a safer platform and emphasized the importance of cooperation with relevant parties, including the Communications Ministry and MCMC. Meanwhile, Fahmi mentioned that current MCMC data showed takedown requests for content on X at around 50 percent, which he considered a moderate figure, indicating room for improvement.

Fahmi also instructed his team to establish closer cooperation with X to enhance internet safety, particularly for children and families. Previously, on January 11, MCMC imposed a temporary restriction on Grok in Malaysia due to its misuse in generating explicit content. Following this, Fahmi stated that MCMC was considering legal action against X for non-compliance with Malaysian online safety laws.
