Selangor: Just eight months after taking up diving, young Selangor athlete Ayu Syuhaida Khairul pulled off a major upset by winning the women's individual 3-metre springboard gold medal at the 2026 Selangor Malaysia Games (SUKMA) today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ayu, 14, remained composed at the Selangor Aquatics Centre to score 237.20 points, beating Sarawak's Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin, who took silver with 223.20 points. The bronze medal went to Federal Territories athlete Lee Yiat Qing with 216.10 points.

Ayu, who spent most of her childhood in artistic gymnastics, said her victory today was most unexpected. 'My dives were consistent today. I was quite surprised because my training wasn't very consistent. But when the competition came, suddenly I was consistent, and then I became more confident. By my third dive, I was really confident. I was like, 'I can do this, I can do this.' Then I did it, and I couldn't believe I came first because I really didn't expect to win a medal. I was so happy, like. wow, a dream,' she said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak won the mixed synchronised platform gold through Elvis Priestly Clement and Nur Eilisha Rania Muhammad Abrar Raj with 253.95 points, edging Federal Territories, who scored 229.47 points, and Selangor with 213.79 points into second and third places respectively.
