Kuala lumpur: A total of 126 Rohingya refugees were relocated from outside the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jalan Bukit Petaling here after they set up tents and turned the area into a temporary settlement. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus stated that the area outside the UNHCR office is sensitive and not suitable for use as a temporary settlement by any individual or community.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, police, in collaboration with the Immigration Department, moved all the refugees to the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters for screening and documentation. The screening process will occur at a more appropriate location, and those without proper documents will be detained. Meanwhile, individuals with documents will have their status verified by the UNHCR. UNHCR, alongside support units and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), will find suitable accommodation for those with valid documents, as action under the Immigration Act cannot be taken against them.

Fadil further detailed that 58 of the 126 Rohingya refugees relocated were adults. He noted the full cooperation of the refugees during the operation, with no incidents of obstruction against public officers reported. There are also unverified claims about the arrival of two more buses believed to be transporting Rohingya refugees to the capital.

Earlier reports from Bernama indicated that the relocation operation began at 8.20 pm using four police trucks. The initial two vehicles deployed were insufficient due to the refugees carrying luggage and personal belongings. The media had also reported that the group arrived in the capital earlier in the day on three buses from Penang.
