Ipoh: Approximately 2,300 students from Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) participated in the launching ceremony of the National Month and the Merdeka@PUO 2026 Parade, which took place at the Astaka Padang, PUO Campus A here today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Perak State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Jenny Choy Tsi Jen stated that the programme, organised for the second time, serves as more than just a grand parade. It acts as a platform to strengthen the spirit of patriotism, nationalism, and love for the country. Choy remarked that the participation of over 2,300 individuals symbolizes the strength of cooperation among students, staff, and the community in appreciating the true meaning of independence.

Choy emphasized that such programmes are crucial not only in strengthening inter-ethnic relations but also as a form of historical appreciation, recognition of the contributions of freedom fighters, and the cultivation of love for the homeland. She attended the launching ceremony at the PUO Silver Jubilee Hall and shared her thoughts on the significance of the event.

Earlier in the day, Choy, along with PUO Director Dr Salmi Che Meh, led the parade, which commenced around 8:30 am. The procession wound around the polytechnic grounds, accompanied by nine decorated vehicles, culminating at the PUO Silver Jubilee Hall for the formal launching ceremony.

Choy urged the younger generation to appreciate the meaning of independence not merely through celebrations and festivities but to translate it through actions, deeds, and responsibilities as Malaysian citizens. Meanwhile, Dr Salmi noted that all the participating students were first-semester diploma students who had recently begun their studies.

She added that, besides the parade, the programme also included a forum aimed at providing insight and awareness to the participants regarding the history of independence and the responsibility of the younger generation in embracing the spirit of patriotism. Dr Salmi highlighted that the organisation of such a programme reflects PUO's commitment to producing a Technical and Vocational Education and Training generation that is not only highly skilled and competitive but also possesses a spirit of patriotism and a sense of responsibility toward the country.
