Kuala Terengganu: Drowning incidents in Terengganu have claimed 25 lives over the past year, said Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Nor Mahathir Muhamad. He stated that the fatalities resulted from 26 cases reported to his department, occurring across various locations such as rivers, beaches, and waterfalls.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the number of deaths has decreased from the 29 lives lost in similar incidents in 2023, from a total of 23 cases recorded. Most drowning cases took place in rivers, waterfalls, and beaches, including in the districts of Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, and Besut, Nor Mahathir Muhamad noted after the Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department Annual Parade 2025.
Meanwhile, he emphasized that the department remains in standby mode for potential water-related accidents as the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) has not ended yet. The department's preparedness includes patrol work along the state's coastline, particularly during periods of high waves.
