Sarawak: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged building contractors in the state to explore the use of synthetic timber as part of Sarawak's transition towards a green economy and its long-term strategy for sustainable forest management. He emphasized that this alternative material could support both the construction industry's needs and Sarawak's environmental commitments.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari addressed the potential of synthetic timber during his speech at the opening of the International Conference on Industrial Forest Plantation Research and Innovation 2025. He noted that synthetic timber, made from a combination of timber fibre and other chemical products, offers a lower carbon intensity compared to traditional materials, despite some emissions. He pointed out that while emissions are inevitable in industrial construction, they can be mitigated through natural processes and advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence.
Abang Johari also highlighted Sarawak's forestry strategy, which focuses on conserving natural rainforests while strengthening plantation programmes to ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials. Sarawak currently maintains 62 per cent of its landmass under forest cover, with significant areas designated as permanent forest estates and Totally Protected Areas. He emphasized the importance of well-managed forest plantations in reducing pressure on natural forests and contributing to innovation, climate resilience, and economic growth.
He further stated that enriching forests through scientific research and innovation is essential. Investment in research to plant more trees within a shorter period and developing storage areas to absorb carbon while producing more oxygen is crucial for Sarawak's sustainable future.
