Abang Johari: Unity, Respect Key To Nationhood

Sarawak: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on Malaysians to reflect on the values of unity, respect, and mutual understanding that have shaped the nation since its formation in 1963. Delivering his Malaysia Day 62 message through Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the Thanksgiving Ceremony of Other Religions in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration here last night, Abang Johari said the celebration is a historic occasion that reminds the people of the sacrifices of the nation's founding fathers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari highlighted that this year's celebration carries the national theme 'Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka' and the Sarawak theme 'Sarawak Maju Makmur Dalam Malaysia'. It reflects the spirit of togetherness of the country's diverse communities in building a shared future. He emphasized that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remains the cornerstone of the Federation, adding that since 2022, it has been formally recognized under Article 160(2) of the Federal Constitution.

Abang Johari noted that 13 out of 29 demands put forward by Sarawak and Sabah have been resolved, including recognition of the Sarawak Public Works Department, Irrigation Department, and the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as technical departments. Other outcomes include Sarawak's representation in the Inland Revenue Board, regulatory control over gas, and the return of Bintulu Port.

In addition, the Premier acknowledged the state's progress in education and healthcare, with greater autonomy in curriculum development, dual-language teaching, and commitments to increased federal healthcare funding. He stated that these outcomes reflect true partnership and federalism, with the cooperation and commitment of the Federal Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

On Sarawak's economic transformation, Abang Johari discussed the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which focuses on green economy, renewable energy, digital technology, and high-value industries. He remarked that Sarawak is positioning itself ahead of the curve, with economic strategies designed to ensure prosperity and opportunities for all Sarawakians.

Abang Johari also commended the uniqueness of Sarawak in hosting the annual Thanksgiving Ceremony of Other Religions, reflecting the state's culture of inclusiveness, tolerance, and respect among its multi-religious society. He stressed the importance of preserving the spirit of unity symbolized by the slogan Segulai Sejalai, urging citizens to reject extremism and fanaticism that could disrupt peace and harmony, while affirming that every citizen is equal under the Federal Constitution.
