Sarawak: The organisation of agricultural expos provides small-scale farmers in Sarawak with valuable exposure to modern farming technologies and processing techniques, helping to strengthen the sector. Sarawak Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, highlighted the crucial role of these expos in enhancing the agricultural landscape of the region.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Rundi emphasized the significant impact of digital platforms in improving food security and supply networks across Sarawak. "Through the Sarawak State Farmers Organisation (PPNS), we aim to educate farmers on using digital platforms to market their agricultural and livestock products. Modern technology can also help streamline farming operations," he stated during a press conference following the launch of the PPNS Mini Agriculture Expo.
Dr. Rundi expressed optimism towards the future, suggesting that more such expos should be organized. These events are not only vital for promoting fresh produce and livestock but also for connecting farmers with industry stakeholders including banks and import-export companies. The current expo, a three-day event held at the PPNS Building, features 45 exhibitors from various agro-based sectors in Kuching and Samarahan.
Furthermore, Dr. Rundi encouraged landowners, particularly those with Native Customary Rights (NCR) land, to consider collaborative efforts in developing land in clusters. This approach could significantly boost productivity and attract investment in downstream agricultural industries. He also noted plans to advance the pepper and commodity sectors in the state, which hold potential for generating substantial revenue through value-added processing.
