Kuala lumpur: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that up to RM50 million will be allocated from the Skills Development Fund Corporation's (PTPK) high-impact programme. This fund aims to introduce new fields of study in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as part of the TVET 2.0 initiative.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the new fields include hydrogen energy technology, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and maritime engineering. These areas have not previously been offered by TVET institutions. Ahmad Zahid emphasized that the fund is designed to implement TVET 2.0 into tangible programmes in new areas not previously taught.
He highlighted that hydrogen energy technology training will focus on vehicles and machinery, particularly in energy generation. MRO is gaining popularity among TVET students due to strong career prospects, with opportunities to train abroad with global aviation giants such as Airbus and Boeing.
Ahmad Zahid also mentioned that the government prioritizes graduates from tahfiz institutions and pondok schools for participation in TVET programmes, enhancing their opportunities for high-skilled employment. Efforts to streamline TVET implementation across ministries and agencies will commence next month under the Chief Secretary to the Government's coordination to expedite TVET 2.0's rollout.
He stressed the importance of expanding training in line with workforce requirements and the needs of sectors receiving foreign direct investment (FDI), noting that demand exceeds supply. The MRO and semiconductor industries are among those urgently needing skilled workers.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the government's agreement to use up to RM50 million for strengthening TVET 2.0. As Finance Minister, he stated that this fund usage is contingent on collaboration between employers, industry players, and the government to ensure TVET 2.0's success. Under the Budget 2026 framework, RM650 million has been allocated for PTPK.
