AI and Digital Trade to Propel Malaysian SMEs into Global Markets

Accra:Collaboration between Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and Alibaba.com is set to play a crucial role in helping local businesses expand into global markets, particularly within the halal industry, by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital trade platforms.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Roger Luo, head of South and Southeast Asia for Alibaba.com, emphasized the importance of cooperation among the government, financial institutions, and ecosystem partners to help more Malaysian products reach international buyers. He noted Malaysia's strong manufacturing capabilities and globally competitive halal industry, yet acknowledged the challenges SMEs face in understanding new markets and working with limited resources.

Luo highlighted that Alibaba.com is introducing membership packages with guaranteed buyer opportunities to provide Malaysian exporters with greater confidence as they expand globally. These initiatives aim to connect sellers with high-potential and qualified buyers, including L3 Buyer (Platinum), known for stronger purchasing intent and higher value.

Furthermore, Alibaba.com and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) have formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance digital trade and export readiness. This includes plans to develop a dedicated Halal Pavilion on Alibaba.com, showcasing certified Malaysian halal products to international buyers.

The recent summit also marked Malaysia's inaugural participation in CoCreate Pitch, Alibaba's global product-based startup competition. With over 2,300 applications from micro, small, and medium enterprises, startups, entrepreneurs, and student innovators nationwide, ten teams advanced to the grand final. Lettuboost, represented by co-founder and chief operating officer Pavithran Julieus Sudhave, secured first place, followed by Global Cerah and Eartheories, with the top three winners earning an opportunity to attend the CoCreate Global Summit 2026 in London.

The competition offered a total prize pool of RM500,000 to support the finalists' business growth. Additionally, UOB Malaysia has committed to supporting local SMEs through its financial expertise and regional network, complementing Alibaba.com's digital commerce ecosystem to help businesses access financing solutions and expand their international reach.
