‘Akal Budi’ Concept Integral to National Unity and Governance, Says Anuwar Ali

Kuala lumpur: The concept of 'akal budi' (intellectual capacity and noble character) must be embedded as a living framework in policy-making and governance to foster national unity, ethical leadership, and sustainable development.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Anuwar Ali emphasized that akal budi is not merely an abstract cultural value but a comprehensive ideology encompassing intellect, humanity, mutual respect, and noble conduct. Speaking at the 2nd Wisdom Malaysia Conference 2026, Anuwar elaborated on the importance of integrating akal budi into the nation's core principles, such as the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara, to promote national unity and racial harmony.

Anuwar asserted that true national strength extends beyond economic output or technological advancement, relying heavily on the integrity, accountability, and ethical values demonstrated by leaders across various sectors. He referenced foundational texts like former Minister Datuk Senu Abdul Rahman's Revolusi Mental and writings of Pendeta Za'ba to highlight how historical Malay thought always integrated intellectual development with societal well-being and moral responsibility.

To ensure long-term socio-economic progress, Anuwar stressed that national development frameworks, including upcoming five-year plans, must actively incorporate akal budi. This includes prioritizing equitable wealth distribution, upliftment of marginalized communities, and fair labor practices. Anuwar emphasized the need for trust in institutions, comparing it to the trust students have in their teachers, and underscoring its importance for demonstrating good governance and shared values.
