AM Best Places Credit Ratings of Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. Under Review With Positive Implications

Tokyo: AM Best has placed under review with positive implications the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A+ (Superior) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings (Long-Term ICR) of 'aa-' (Superior) for Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. (SJ) and its subsidiaries. Concurrently, AM Best has placed under review with positive implications the Long-Term ICR of 'a-' (Excellent) for Sompo International Holdings Ltd. (SIH) based in Pembroke, Bermuda. Additionally, AM Best has placed under review with positive implications the Long-Term Issue Credit Rating of 'a-' (Excellent) on $335 million worth of 7% senior unsecured notes due by 2034, which are guaranteed by SIH.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, these credit rating actions follow the announcement made on 27 August 2025, by SOMPO Holdings, Inc. The company, through a wholly owned subsidiary of SIH, has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire 100% of the issued Class A ordinary shares of Aspen Insurance Holdings Limited (Aspen) for approximately USD 3.5 billion in an all-cash transaction. Upon completion, Aspen is set to become a subsidiary of SIH, the intermediate holding company under SJ.
