Kuala lumpur: The 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) is a significant milestone for regional energy cooperation, as member states prepare to adopt frameworks that will define the bloc's energy strategy for the next five years. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who also serves as Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, emphasized that the meeting is centered on implementing policies to bolster energy security and advance the region's shift to sustainable energy sources.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah stated that the meeting's focus extends beyond concluding the current work plan, aiming to chart the energy landscape for the coming half-decade. The conference is set to deliver on the Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) under Malaysia's Chairmanship, which are crucial for accelerating ASEAN's energy transition and improving energy security.
One major outcome expected from the meeting is the official launch of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II (2026-2030), which will serve as a roadmap for regional collaboration toward a cleaner and more integrated energy system. Additionally, the ministers will formalize the Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), advancing multilateral power trade and cross-border grid connectivity.
To enhance regional resilience against global supply disruptions, the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security (AFAPS) will be formalized through document exchanges, ensuring collective preparedness in maintaining petroleum supply stability. The meeting will also announce the APG Financing Initiative (APGF), a mechanism to attract and coordinate infrastructure investments for APG projects.
The ministers are also set to discuss strategic frameworks recommended by the Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME), including the Renewable Energy Long-Term Roadmap, the ASEAN Energy Efficiency Database and Investment Platform (Building), and the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Subsea Power Cable. Progress reports on the ASEAN Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Deployment Framework and the ASEAN Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Framework will also be reviewed.
These platforms are deemed essential for mobilizing investment, technology, and policy collaboration needed to achieve shared goals, impacting the lives of over 670 million ASEAN citizens.
