ANPR Toll Payment System to Launch on PLUS Highway with Hutan Kampung-Sungai Dua Pilot

Kuala lumpur: The open toll payment system utilizing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology is set to be introduced in stages on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) starting this October. The initial rollout will occur on the Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua stretch in Penang, marking the commencement of this pilot project.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that ANPR is a preliminary step toward the implementation of the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system, which is anticipated to alleviate congestion at toll plazas within the next two years. This system enables vehicles to pass through any existing lane without stopping, thereby facilitating smoother and more flexible travel.

Nanta, who personally tested the system at a toll plaza, noted its efficiency in reducing wait times. He emphasized that there are no charges for registration and that users can choose any toll lane. The system's development involved local highway industry experts and was executed without financial support from the government.

Initially, the ANPR system will be tested at 13 toll plazas covering 35 lanes, with the intention of expanding it across the entire PLUS network. The system uses cameras to identify vehicle registration numbers, allowing for digital and cashless toll payments. It also offers e-invoice displays and transaction checks through a unified digital platform.

Users are required to register online with their personal identification details, vehicle information, and payment method. Once the registration number is detected, the toll fee will be automatically deducted from the registered account. If the account balance is insufficient, the payment will be pursued later from the vehicle owner.

Payments can be made via the new JustGo application, which accepts various methods including e-wallets, bank cards, and Touch 'n Go. Nanta reiterated that there are no costs involved for the public to register or use the system, and they retain the option to use any existing toll lanes.
